I am not sure I am doing this right. It has to do with fractions. Here's the problem:

Shelly said she has 6/8(the six is supposed to be over the 8) of all the 1998 NFL collectors' cards. Mark said he has 9/12 of them. Do they have the same number of cards?

I don't know were to start. Can you please explain to me how to get the answer step-by-step. I would really appreciate it.

To find if two fractions are equal, or to find which one is bigger, convert them to a common denominator. Since 8 and 12 both go into 24, I would suggest using that for your common denominator.

9 can't go into 24 for o would the answer be no? It would really be easier if you can take me trow the problem step-by-step. It would be easier for me to understand. This is not for homework. It's a practice sheet for a test. help please.

Example:

. . . . .Which is bigger, 7/12 or 5/9?

. . . . .common denominator: 36

. . . . .(7/12)(3/3) = 21/36

. . . . .(5/9)(4/4) = 20/36

. . . . .Since 21 > 20, then 21/36 > 20/36,
. . . . .so 7/12 > 5/9.

Follow this procedure in your exercise.

Eliz.
