Hi,

We have a family farm which is 13,000 acres in size. We have been discussing/arguing for years as to what the distance would be around the perimeter of the property.

To avoid having to walk around with a measuring wheel to settle this once and for all, can one of you lovely mathematically gifted people please help?

We'd really appreciate it :)

Thank you.

Big family farm: my family's farm was 160 acres. Anyway, there is no general formula for a perimeter of arbitrary shape.

Hi lochaber: There are many different perimeters possible, unless you tell us that the farm has a nice, square shape.

Here is the shape of my family's farm (819.4 acres).

If I desired to find the perimeter, then I'd begin with tax-record maps. From these maps, I could determine the lengths shown above and add 'em up.

Some maps are available on the Internet for free, such as this map from 1915 (partial screen shot).

Hope you find what you need!

By the way, if your farm is a square, then its perimeter is about 18 miles.

for accuracy purposes , better walk and measure the perimeter of your farm

The string thing.

If it is the actual number you are interested in, how about taking a map of your property and pinning a string around it's perimeter and then measuring the length of the string. Multiply that length by the map scale ... I would think that would give you a good approximation.

Am a city boy myself, 13,000 acres is beyond my comprehension.
