Please check my work in solving the following:

. . .5x + 2 = -x + 14

. . .4x + 2 = 14

. . .4x = 16

. . .(4x)/4 = (16)/4

. . .x = 4

Thank you!

You can check the solution to any "solving" problem by plugging the answer back into the original exercise.

In your case:

. . .x = 4:

. . . . .5x + 2 = -x + 14

. . . . .5[4] + 2 ?=? -[4] + 14

. . . . .20 + 2 ?=? -4 + 14

. . . . .22 ?=? 10

Since 22 does not equal 10, then "x = 4" is probably not a valid solution.

Note: You might want to check your work between your first and second lines. How did you add x to either side, and yet end up with 4x on the left-hand side?
