Persian math

In page 3 in the document that its link:

In the 6th century B.C., the Iranian civilization had an elaborate practice in mathematics, which initiated the needs of astronomy, architecture and music.
What is the meaning of elaborate practice?
What is the meaning of practice?
I am not a native English speaker, but neither seems to be the articles' author. Does it make sense when you Google-translate this to your preferred language (Hebrew?)?

P.S. Iranians must be pretty good in math, if only because theirs was the first woman to win the Fields medal. It really sucks that she passed away so young.

This seems like a somewhat odd translation from their original, but I would take "elaborate practice" to mean "extensive activity".

"Practice" is defined broadly as "doing something".
