Percentage mixing oil: i am mixing oil 60% baby oil and 40 % paint thinner.

i am mixing oil 60% baby oil and 40 % paint thinner. it is for a sharppening stone
but i only have 50% baby oil. so what percentage of paint thinners do i need
i would guess 33% dont know. how do you do the maths on this
my brain is starting to melt thanks:lol:

"I only have 50% baby oil" makes no sense. You have a specific amount of something, not a percent, unless you state a percent of a specific amount. If you had, say "50 cc of baby oil" then you could say 0.60x= 50 so that x= 50/.60. Then the 40% thinner would be 0.40(50/60)= (4/6)(50)= (2/3)(50) cc of thinner.

i have 500 ml of baby oil

so my total is 800 ml

60% of 800 = 500

40% of 800 = 300

500 + 300 = 800 so i need 300 ml of paint thinners is that correct or not


i still dont know how to get 800 number

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, you have 500 ml of baby oil, and want to use that oil to make a new mixture which is 60% baby oil and 40% paint thinner. You then want to know the volume of paint thinner you'll need to make this mixture. If that's correct, then you could set up an equation using the information you do know. You know that 60% of the new mixture will be baby oil and you know you have 500 ml of baby oil. The word "of" here is a keyword that indicates a specific arithmetic operation should be used. Which operation do you think you should use? (If you need a refresher, try here). Now that you know what operation to use, let the unknown volume of the new mixture be denoted by x, and you can form an expression. What value should that expression be equal to? Then what do you get when you try to solve the equation for x?

1/6 of the baby oil dropped. So you must drop the percent by 1/6 too.
