How would you show in a square shaded area of 12 1/2 % ?

Thank you.

Does that mean that I would need to make 8 squares in the one square and shade only one square?

yes ... make sure all 8 squares in the large square are the same size.

also, you could draw in two diagonals from corner to opposite corner, then divide each of the 4 large triangles formed in half ... the smaller triangles will each be 1/8 of the total area.

Hello, Rsaito952!

It's impossible to divide a square into 8 equal squares.

Divide the square into eight equal regions . . . of any shape.

Here's one way:
Code:
      * - + - + - + - *
      |:::|   |   |   |
      |:::|   |   |   |
      |:::|   |   |   |
      + - + - + - + - +
      |   |   |   |   |
      |   |   |   |   |
      |   |   |   |   |
      * - + - + - + - *

Skeeter's suggestion:
Code:
      * - - - + - - - *
      | \:::::|     / |
      |   \:::|   /   |
      |     \:| /     |
      + - - - * - - - +
      |     / | \     |
      |   /   |   \   |
      | /     |     \ |
      * - - - + - - - *
