What do they mean?

My guess is that they represent the amount of posts you have. I have 2 pencils under my username. IDK exactly when this occurred, but I think it happened around the 50-55 number of posts marker.

That's pretty much it. They are a graphical representation of the category printed directly above.

I have no idea what the thresholds are. I don't pay any attention to the category names, either.
