order of operations: {19-2[4+(-9)]}-18/square root of 25-16

Re: order of operations!! need help.

{19-2[4+(-9)]}-18/square root of 25-16

First you'd do the 4+-9.. then youd times that by 2.. then you'd subtract that # from 19...you'd leave that alone for a min.. you would then go to the square roots.. you'd find the square root of 25 and the square root of 16 and subtract them... then, youd subtract 18 and divide the top from the bottom.... there's your answer!!

What grade r u in???

Re: order of operations!! need help.

heyy okay so what answer did you get??
im in my first year of college. =/
i didnt really pay attention in class when i was in high school thats why. ;)
what grade are you in?

Re: order of operations!! need help.

i hate mathhh! ughh. thanks for trying though.

Re: order of operations!! need help.

Well gosh darn it! =[
I know what you mean.. I hate it when (like that problem) it's like "Yes i got it!" and you're all proud of yourself.. then its wrong  .... gosh.. math is soooo black and white.. right or wrong...
What are you in college for may I ask?? Do you know what u want to do???
Sorry I couldnt help with that....

Re: order of operations!! need help.

im just getting my liberals now.

Re: order of operations!! need help.

You don't win friends on this board by saying that you hate math. You will learn to love it when you master it. Google "order of operations".

{19-2[4+(-9)]}-18/square root of 25-16 means...

\(\displaystyle (19 - 2[4 + (-9)]) - \frac{18}{\sqrt{25}}-16\)

Following the order of operations convention, which you MUST understand and memorize, in this problem you would first evaluate the innermost grouping symbols "[4 + (-9)]" and then the other grouping symbols always working from the innermost outward.
After getting rid of all grouping symbols do the radicals and exponents.
Then go through the problem from left to right and do the multiplication and the division in the order they appear.
Finally, do the remaining addition and subtraction as they appear from left to right.

I have a hunch that you need some additional parenthesis in your original problem to clarify what is meant.

Re: order of operations!! need help.

That sounds good :D
So you dont have to have a major when you enter?..... I'm SOOOOOOOOO stressed out about college.. scared of how I'm gonna get money.. all that crap.... Is it as scary as everyone makes it out to be??

Re: order of operations!! need help.

Not trying to offend people on the board.... it's hard when you get things so easily but then you struggle so much over math... it definetly doesnt make you like it that's for sure... I really need help with that trig problem if you could.... I'm keeping an open mind.... no more of the 'h' word...
