A sheet of cardboard measures 15cm by 17cm. 4 equal squares are cut out of the corners and the sides turned up to form an open rectangular box. Find the length of the edge of the squares cut out, so that the box will have a maximum volume. What is this maximum volume?

A sheet of cardboard measures 15cm by 17cm. 4 equal squares are cut out of the corners and the sides turned up to form an open rectangular box. Find the length of the edge of the squares cut out, so that the box will have a maximum volume. What is this maximum volume?

The volume C = (17 - 2x)(15 - 2x)x

Expanding and simplifying, V = x^3 - 64x^2 + 255x.

Take the first derivitive and set equal to zero and solve for x by means of the quadratic formula.

Compute the voume/
