The book makes it even more confusing when they are trying to explain things and i dont seem to get it. Please help. if anyone knows if any sites that may be help me as well. Can't seem to find anything on this subject. Thanks a ton. amanda

What's an example of a problem that is confusing to you??

One board is 2 and 1/2 feet in length. Another board is 2 feet and 9 inches. What is the total length of the two pieces? they are saying 2 1/2= 2feet and 6 inches. and 2 and 3/4= 2feet and 9 inches. Im not sure how they did the math. but if was I was to convert this like i was taught then the numbers come out differently. Is there another way you should be converting these?

Ok i see how you did this. Thanks alot because i wasn't sure what i was doing because in the my ged book it doesn't show that well how they got the answers they did. So when i look at it i was confused and wasn't sure how they got that answer.

Example: You have two pieces of wood. One is 6ft. 8in. and the other 4ft. 7in. what is the total length of the two pieces? So you add the like units

6ft. 8in.+ 4ft. 7in.= 10ft. 15in.

regroup= 10ft. 15in.= 10ft.+1ft.+3in.??

Where does the 3 in. come from? am i just that dumb?

After adding the "feet" and adding the "inches," you have

10 ft. 15 in.

15 in. is enough to make another foot, because 12 inches is the same thing as 1 foot.

15 inches is 12 inches + 3 inches, right?
And 12 inches is the same thing as 1 foot.

So, 12 inches + 3 inches is 1 ft + 3 inches

And our 10 ft 15 in can be thought of as 10 ft + 1 ft + 3 in

OR, 11 ft. 3 in.<------error corrected. Thanks, Denis

Thanks guys so much for helping me understand this. I don't always get it the first time and takes me quite a bit of time to understand things
