Hello,
I'm trying to figure out this problem and I'm not sure where to start -104 = 8x. :eek:

-104 = 8x.

Hello, Patricia,

Since we want to get x by itself, we look to see what’s happening on the x side of the equation and find a way to alter it. Right now, x is being multiplied by 8. If we do the "reverse" of that (in other words, divide by 8) we can get rid of the 8. We must always do the same thing to both sides of the equation though, so we divide the left side by 8 too.

(-104)/8 = (8x)/8

Then simplify.
Hope that helps.

Is there an easier way to think about (solve) -143 = -11x. I wanted to know which process to use to find x. :roll:

You would divide both sides of the equation by -11:

(-143)/(-11) = x
x = 143/11
