Let x = smaller number
Then 5x = larger number

Now, how do you get the "difference" between two numbers?

Can you use this information to write an equation?

If you're still having trouble, please repost showing all the steps you've taken to try to solve the problem, so we can see how best to help you.

What have you tried? How far have you gotten? Where are you stuck?

You picked a variable for the "another" number, wrote an expression (in terms of this variable) for the "one" number, subtracted the smaller from the larger, set the difference equal to 148, and... then what?

Please be complete. Thank you! :D

I gues where I am stuck is that I thought the equation would be p = 5(n) That is as far as I got

I gues where I am stuck is that I thought the equation would be

p = 5(n) ........................................(1)

THe difference between the two numbers is 148

p - n = 148....................................(2)

Now use (1) in (2) - and eliminate 'p' (replace 'p' by '5n').

then solve for 'n'

then find 'p' using (1) or (2)

Check your answer by using the values of 'p' and 'n' in (1) and (2)
