Hello,

I have a problem that seems impossible:

Lily uses the $25.00 she earns each week from her part-time job to pay for lunches and snacks. She spends $30.00 more each week on lunches than she does on snacks. How much more does Lily spend on lunches each week?

The above is from a 6th grade math text.

Perhaps the equation:

X=lunches
X-30=snacks

X + (X-30)=25
2X=55
X=55/2
X=27.5

So she spends $27.50 on lunches and then she only has a negative 2.50 left for snacks, but then steals the rest? Borrows the rest?

Are you sure you read the problem correctly? That last sentence doesn't make sense to me. The way you set the problem up seems to me to be consistent with what the problem says.

If your answer of x=22.50 is correct then she spends x-30=-7.50. Maybe she has a credit card???

$30 is probably a typo and should be $3; then 14 + 11 = $25
