Hello board,

A + B = $18.68
Note that B = 12% of A

What is the formula to figure this out?

There is no forumla. There is understanding of the notation and the concept of substitution.

B = 12% of A

OR

B = 0.12*A -- This demonstrates understanding fo the notation

A + B = $18.68

OR

A + (0.12*A) = $18.68 - This demonstrates the concept of substitution.

So you're saying that there's no formula where I can slap, say, $18.68 into for it to figure out what A is?
If that's the case then doh!, but thanks for replying.

If you create the formula, then there will be one, but it will nto be very useful for any other problem.

Let's see what you get.
