A small-appliance manufacturer finds that the profit P (in dollars) generated by producing x microwave ovens per week is given the the formula P = 1/10(471 - x) provided that 0 < x < 200. How many ovens must be manufactured in a given week to generate a profit of $1526?

They've given you a formula, relating the production number "x" to the profit "P", and then they've given you the value of P, and asked for the value of x. So plug in the given value for P, and solve the equation for the value of x.

If you get stuck, please reply showing all of your work so far. Thank you! :D

I got to $1526=1/10(471-x) before I posted. I got stuck with the fraction. I just tried dividing both sides by 10 and that didn't work either

I will probably be able to figure it out, I just don't know where to start.

Are you sure that isn't (x-471), instead of (471-x)?. The way you wrote it results in a negative number of stoves.

I know, I think that's why I'm having such a hard time. The way it's written doesn't make any logical sense. I copied it exactly though...

Looks fine to me; a multiplication by x is required:

x(471 - x) / 10 = 1526
471x - x^2 = 15260
x^2 - 471x + 15260 = 0

Use the quadratic: it'll solve nicely; keep the solution that's within range.

That actually kind of made sense, I just don't understand where the other "x" came from.

Your formula gives profit for 1 of the x ovens; but you'll sell all x, right?

Your problem is weirdly worded by a weird teacher.

You mean the x=-b+ the square root of b^2-4ac divided by 2a right? I did that and checked my answer and it was wrong.

no kidding she's wierd, she sent me this homework in the mail, it's due the first day of school!

WHAT did you get? I got x = 35 or 436, so 35 = microwave ovens to be sold.

What's the "supposedly correct" answer?

Well, I got 35 too, SO 35 it is!
Don't you know how to solve a quadratic?

Bye...leaving to watch my grandson play baseball....he da best

I got it, I got my signs mixed up. LOL! Thank you so much, I hope your grandson does well!
