from these numbers I have to make a six column f/d table
30 26 16 23 22 10 8 15 16 23
29 30 22 15 24 9 5 4 15 24
21 24 16 14 21 13 6 2 23 29
24 21 27 13 20 8 4 3 24 20
22 18 23 23 17 7 6 1 16 17

(a) construct a six column f/d table

i tried using 5 classes 6 classes 10, 15 it just doesnt work
I know how to figure out the rest of the problem because its making a histogram but i cant figure out the number of classes to use to move onto the histogram

If I interpret your problem correctly, your range is 1-30. So for 6 columns look at the frequency of numbers 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-25 & 26-30.

Re: Number of classes

but then i have to make a histogram doesn't a histogram go up and hit a turning point and come back down to zero when i tallied the numbers i got
1-5=6
6-10=7
11-15=6
16-20=8
21-25=16
26-30=6

doesn't a histogram go up and hit a turning point and come back down to zero <<< No - the shape of the histogram depends on type of distribution

when i tallied the numbers i got
1-5=6
6-10=7
11-15=6
16-20=8
21-25=16
26-30=6

Re: Number of classes

im going by my professors example he showed and his starts low goes up to a high number then it goes back down to a smaller number and it makes a polygon

histogram-2.gif
doesnt it have to be like this start at or around zero and go up hit a turning point and come back down to around zero

It started with 6 - went up to 16 - came back to 6 - what's the problem?

Re: Number of classes

isn't a histogram suppose to go up and down like a hill not up and down and back up again
just like it went from 6 to 7 back to 6 then up to 8 then 16

Re: Number of classes

Read your textbook - look at some example problems - also google the subject.

Re: Number of classes

I've been on google all day I even had a friend help me and she said she tried every set of classes and it doesn't make the histogramn go up and down its more like up and down then back up can a histogram go up and down and back up then down or does it have to be increasing then decrease at the max point

Re: Number of classes

I just seen a couple that go up and down several times on google imagesso i hope mine is right

Re: Number of classes

A single mode distribution will go up and down - as you have described.

Bi-modal or multi-modal distributions can have any number of peaks.

A truly random (uniform) distribution - only exist in our imagination - will not have any mode (peak) at all.

so what your saying is since there are sveral of the same numbers it will go up and down several times? or several peaks?
