1. A baseball team won 50 of its first 75 games. The team still has 45 games to play. For the team to win 60% of its games over the entire season, the number of the remaining games that it must win is ?

2. A carton of whipping cream contains 35% butterfat. A carton of 2% milk contains 2 % butterfat. If a volume of whipping cream is mixed with an equal volume of 2% milk...the percentage of butterfat in the mixture is ?

thanks !

1) What is the total number of games? How many games comprise "sixty percent" of this total? How many games have they already won? So how many more do they need to win?

2) Pick some starting amount. For simplicity's sake, pick 100 grams (or whatever other unit you like). How many grams of fat are in the 35%-fat cream? How many grams of fat are in the 2%-fat milk? How many total grams are contained in the mixture? How many of those grams are fat? What then is the percentage of fat in the mixture?

If you get stuck, please reply showing all of your work and reasoning. Thank you.

uhmm...

alright .
my work for number one :

120 games in total.
60/100 times 120 = 7200/100 = 72 .
what now ?

Follow the rest of the instructions:

Hint: Read the exercise. Then subtract.

hmm..

OH I GOT IT !
they won 50 games so far,
and they need to win 72 games...
72 - 50 = 22 !
is that right ?

Correct!

Since volume of mixture is same, make it 1 for each; so:
(1*35 + 1*2) / 2 = ?

Tatoo this on your wrist:
a*x
b*y
=====
(a+b)*z

z = (ax + by) / (a + b)

Where are you stuck?

Please reply showing how far you've gotten in following the step-by-step instructions, provided earlier. Thank you.

:)

okay this is how far i got
35% of 100 + 2% of 1-- = 37% of 200.
to find how many in 100 , divide 37 by 2 , and get..18.5%
what now ?

I will guess that you mean the following:

. . . . .35% of 100 grams: 35 grams
. . . . .2% of 100 grams: 2 grams

. . . . .total: 37 grams of fat in 200 grams of mixture

. . . . .37 ÷ 200 = 0.185 = 18.5% fat

I'm sorry, but what do you mean by "what now"? The question asked for the fat percentage, and you've calculated the fat percentage. There's nothing else to do with this.

Or was there some other additional part of this exercise which wasn't included in your initial post...?

Thank you.
