Question:
A Rectangle is 6m long by 5m wide. When each dimension is increased by X m, the area is triple. Find X

My work:

Original
5m * 6m = 30m^2

Increased:
(6+x)(5+x) = 90 --> (The old area tripled as stated in question)

So by FOILing I would get:

30+11x+x^2 = 90
Now I'm assuming I need to use the Quadratic Formula, or Complete the Square. So I would equal the Quadratic equation to ax^2+bx+c=0

x^2 + 11x - 60 = 0

Now do I just plug the numbers into the Quadratic formula to get 'X'?

Looks good to me! :D

But why not just factor...?

. . . . .\(\displaystyle x^2\, +\, 11x\, -\, 60\, =\, (x\, +\, 15)(x\, -\, 4)\)

Have fun!
