On a map of Nevada, where 3/4 inch represents 40 miles, the shortest distance between Las Vegas and Henderson is 4 inches. If the actual distance between the two cities is 270 miles, what is the difference between the actual distance and the shortest distance according to the map.

Well, to solve this problem, you need to take the information given to you and work with it a little. The problem states that 3/4 of an inch represents 40 miles on the map. So ask yourself, how many miles does 1 whole inch represent? Once you know that, you also know the distance the map says is shortest. And since the problem gives you the actual distance, the answer is then a stone's throw away.

What are your thoughts? What have you tried? How far have you gotten? Where are you stuck?

For instance, you set up the proportion from the map (refresher here), solved to find the actual miles represented by the four inches, subtracted, and... then what?

Please be complete. Thank you! ;)

close but no dice

the problem seems simple enough, however I'm still analyzing all the information and trying to figure out how all the information works together.
the answer choices are...

A. 57 mi

B. 120 mi

C. 150 mi

D. 213 mi

I think i've found the answer!... its 120 Miles :)
The actual distance is 270 miles. If the correct answer is 120, then the apparent distance on the map is either 270 - 120 = 150, or else 270 + 120 = 390. Which did you get? ;)

hummm,. I used a ruler to visualize my answer and worked with fractions in a sort of abstract backwards kinda way and came up with "120 miles", so I guess I could be off? soooo the answer is 150?

You might want to try using the mathematics.

...and worked with fractions in a sort of abstract backwards kinda way...
Actually, what you did was quite the opposite of abstraction; you used physical measurements and hands-on tools.

...and came up with "120 miles"
How? What distance did you get with your concrete method? What difference did you then get when you subtracted?

soooo the answer is 150?
By what reasoning? By what steps or method? (I'm not saying you're wrong; I'm just asking how you got this, other than "guessing another one of the listed options".)

Please reply showing your work. Thank you! ;)
