this is really getting me down, have been trying to get my head round it for hours for my degree homework. i have to work out the stress in a solid drive shaft and then a hollow. it was all going well referring to my notes until i came to one point where all i wrote was negative to positive and came up with a answer i just cannot get with my calculator. somehow i got -2.227x10to the of -5= -d4 to equal 68.69=d. in my homework i have to get 5.469x10 to the power of -6= -d4 to equal d= and a positive number. please help.

-(0.06869[sup:1pflktkc]4[/sup:1pflktkc])= -2.227x10[sup:1pflktkc]-5[/sup:1pflktkc].

0.048359[sup:1pflktkc]4[/sup:1pflktkc]=5.469x10[sup:1pflktkc]-6[/sup:1pflktkc].

(-0.048359)[sup:1pflktkc]4[/sup:1pflktkc] equals that,
but -(d[sup:1pflktkc]4[/sup:1pflktkc]) will not be positive if d is a positive real number (or a negative real number).

Can you clarify a little ?

the 4th power of it,
you've written d[sup:mxqhvpz9]4[/sup:mxqhvpz9] as d4 in your post.

(0.048359)(0.048359)(0.048359)(0.048359) = 5.469x10[sup:mxqhvpz9]-6[/sup:mxqhvpz9].

5.469x10[sup:mxqhvpz9]-6[/sup:mxqhvpz9] = 0.000005469.

i mean how on a calculater would you work out the 4th power of my answer? sorry am being abit of a thicko but before i did this degree i did a nd in motor vehicle n has kinda been hard to take in all this degree level maths n physics in only like 6/7 weeks

to get the 4th root on your calculator, you can use the x[sup:1zifmcn2]y[/sup:1zifmcn2] button,
and put y = 1/4 or 0.25.

It will get more than just squares, cubes and so on.
If you want the cube root, then you type in 1/3 for the power, exponent or index.

Also the 4th root is the square root of the square root.
So that's another way.

Keep going until you've got your answer clear, ask all you want.

to get d[sup:1zifmcn2]4[/sup:1zifmcn2], type in the number, then press the x[sup:1zifmcn2]y[/sup:1zifmcn2] button, followed by 4.
or just square it twice.

thanks a lot :) thats been really helpful i can now do the rest of my question and will know for the future thank you v much :D
