I need help with this problem.

Solve.
(3x+6)^2-2(3x+6)-3x-6=0

Here's what I have so far:
9x +12-6x-12-3x-6=0

Then should I combine like terms & simplify.

What you have seems to be wrong. You probably have a couple of different ways to solve for x. One way is to expand, then simplify and solve for x. Another way is to recognize that the term "3x+6" is common throughout the left side. In other words, if you let 3x+5 be u, then your equation becomes u[sup:2886sgwr]2[/sup:2886sgwr]-2u-u=0. You might solve for u, then substitute 3x+6 back into your result. You might also recognize that if you remove the second set of parenthesis you will then be able to combine like terms and make the equation a little less cumbersome.
