Need help writing an algebraic expression

In a table you have

x =1 y =1
x=2 y= 1 + 2
x=3 y = 1+ 2+ 4
x=4 y = 1+ 2+ 4 + 8
x=5 y = 1 + 2 +4 + 8 + 16

I understand the pattern but I do not know how to write the expression for how x relates to y. Could someone please guide me in the right direction here. I would appreciate any help. Thank you so much!

HINT: So y = 31, right? 2^x = 2^5 = 32; 32 - 1 = 31

So is it y =2^x -1
