1) sue invested some of $1500 bouns into an account that paid 4.5% interested after one year. the rest of her bouns she invested in a mutual fund that suffered a 3% loss for the same year. If the net profit from both accounts was only $15 how much was invested in each account?

this is what I have tried
x+y+1500
.045x + .03y=15

2) three times the larger of the two numbers is 10 more than twice the smaller. Five times the smaller is 11 less than four times the larger. What are the numbers?

this is what I got and I am stuck as to how to finish it
x= smaller y=larger

3y=10+2x 5x=11-4y

I'll help you with your first problem.

You did NOT define what your variables stand for.

I assume it's this:

x = amount invested in first account
y = amount invested in second account

The total she had to invest was $1500, so

x + y = 1500

The first account earned interest at 4.5% for one year. So,

interest earned on x dollars invested at 4.5% for 1 year is 0.045*x dollars.

The second account LOST 3% in that year. Since there was a loss, the amount earned is negative; the amount gained(or lost, in this case) is y*(-0.03)

The amount earned on the investment for the year was $15.

0.045x + (-0.03y) = 15

You've got two equations in two unknowns:

x + y = 1500
0.045x + (-0.03y) = 15

Solve that system.

3y=10+2x 5x=11-4y
2nd one should be 5x = 4y - 11
So the 2 equations are:
2x - 3y = -10
5x - 4y = -11

Solve for x and y the way you were taught by your teacher.
