i need help with this math subject because i really dont understand how it works
Brief history lesson. There are frequently problems in real life where the problem is what number (standing for weight or length or quantity or whatever) meets some set of requirements. In the Middle Ages the best schools in Christian Europe were in Italy, and the Italians used to write down the unknown number as "cosa," which means "thing" in Italian. They would say 3 times the thing + 2 equals 20. Then someone (I think his name was Cardano, but maybe it was Viete) said that is too time consuming. Let's use letters to stand for numbers. So, we can write 3x + 2 = 20, where 3x means 3 times x. This makes everything quicker and neater, but it also means that we can no longer use X for multiplication most of the time because now x stands for a number. So, we use 3x to mean 3 times x or else 3 * x to mean 3 times x.
The letters in basic algebra stand for numbers. That is all there is to it in basic algebra. The letter gives a name to a number that we do not know yet.
So in your formula of vu - 3, v and u are numbers. (Technically, in a formula, v and u are called variables because they can be any two numbers that are useful for solving a particular problem.) In your problem, you are asked to EVALUATE the formula when u = 3 and and v = 1. So now you can SUBSTITUTE 3 for u and 1 for v into the formula. The formula gives you a recipe for what to do with the numbers. Just follow the recipe.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW? It is very important that you understand concepts in math. Otherwise it just becomes a mass of rules to memorize that do not seem to make any sense. If a concept seems unclear to you, just come here and someone will help you understand it. Then practice A LOT using the concept, and it will become a habit. If what I said above is AT ALL unclear, say so, and someone will help to make the concept simple for you.
