___ __ ____ = ____
3w w+6 w

i dont know how to start this!!! I tried multiplying everything by the denominators (3w times w+6 times w), but I ended up with a bunch of w's and w^2's on each side. I really need help with this. what steps i am supposed to take for this particular problem. THANk YOU!!! :?

If you want to "draw" fractions on these boards, you need to use the Code tags.

Code:
     4 5 20
    --- - --- = ---
    3w w+6 w

Otherwise, type algebraic ratios with grouping symbols, to clearly indicate numerators or denominators.

4/(3w) - 5/(w + 6) = 20/w

To solve for w, here is one approach.

Multiply both sides by 3. Then, the denominators will be w and w + 6.

Next, combine the two ratios with denominator w on one side, and get the ratio with denominator w + 6 on the other side.

Now you have a proportion. Cross multiply, and solve the resulting linear equation for w.

Please show your work, if you would like more help.

Awesome. If I wanted to get professional mathematician langauge, I would've just read my textbook. I needed help because I DON'T understand math. Hence, I obviously don't know 3/4 of the words you just used. Do i need to code that for you? Or is the sarcasm clue enough that I don't care. This site sucks. I'd rather beat my face with my math textbook than try to get realistic help from nerds. At least that would be more productive. Learn how to teach, asshole.

If I correctly understand this latest information, then your main issue is with terminology. I regret any confusion over vocabulary.

(In the future, if you could identify words that confuse you, I could certainly try to explain them.)

Are you able to multiply both sides of the given equation by 3 and show me your result ?

Then, I will try to continue using layman's terminology.

There are many different methods, to solve the given equation. Try to keep in mind that I do not know which methods you've seen or what your class is doing.

PS: From my point-of-view, spoon-feeding completed exercises to people is not teaching.

I'm not an idiot. And I wasn't asking for a step-by-step. I needed a starting point. And, no, multiplying by 3 does not work. If I hadn't already tried that, I wouldn't be on here. But I will go elsewhere for help from now on. Thanks.
