Jackie either drives or bicycles from home to school. Her average speed when driving is 36 mph, and her average speed when bicycling is 12 mph. If it takes her 1/2 hour less to drive to school than to bicycle, how long does it take her to go to school, and how far is the school from her home?
Remember that Speed = Distance divided by time
Let Vc = the speed of the car and Vb = the speed of the bike.
Let Tc = the time by car and Tb = the time by bike.
Given: Vc = 36 mph and Vb = 12 mph.
The key to the prize is that Tc = Tb - .5.
If D is the distance traveled, you can write D/Tc = 36 and D/Tb = 12.
You now have alll the pieces of the puzzle.
Can you put them together such that they yield the solution?
