I was told to find all the angles and sides of a triangle...

a = 1
b = 2
y = 80 degrees ((this is an angle of the triangle))

but I am a little stuck here, i assume the hypotenuse of the triangle is the squareroot of 5..

btw i got the hypotenuse by using the formula a2 + b2 = c2

12 + 22 = c2
1 + 4 = c2
c = squareroot of 5

but everytime i try to find the angles of the triangle, they won't add up to 180 degrees.

what am i supposed to do here?

Wow I have a bit to say about this. Why do you think that b or a is not the hypotenuse? Why can't a be the hypotenuse? Which angle is y? Is it opposite side a or side b or is it opposite the 3rd side? Give us all the information!

that's all the information i was given, i have no idea which one is the hypotenuse and which angle represents the 80 degrees..

but the hypotenuse has to satisfy the Pythagorean theorem right? i mean i don't think a or b can be the hypotenuse because i think i tested it out already..

12 + b2 = 22
1 + 3 = 4
hypotenuse = square root of 3

does the hypotenuse of 3 make sense here?

Wait a minute, you threw me off by mentioning hypotenuse. Do you know what a hypotenuse is? Does every triangle have a hypotenuse?
Usually angle A and side a are opposite one another.... So draw the triangle and see which formula you can use. maybe think law of sines or law of cosines.

alright so i used the law of cosines and got this...

a2 = 12 + 22 - 2(1 * 2) * cos 80
a2 = 1 + 4 - 4 * cos 80
a2 = 5 - 4 * cos 80
square root (5 - 4 * cos 80)
a = 2.074
a = 2.1

so the missing side of the triangle is 2.1

and the two missing angles are 72 degrees and 28 degrees

did i do this correctly?
