Need help solving these equation

3 -1/5(x) = 2
Tough one. Is it "one-fifth x" or "one divided by the quantity five times x"?

x - .2x = 6.4
Combine 'like' terms
x - .2x = 6.4
x(1-.2) = 6.4
x(0.8) = 6.4
Divide by remaining constant
x(0.8) = 6.4
x(0.8)/0.8 = 6.4/0.8
x[(0.8)/0.8] = [6.4/0.8]
x*(1) = 8
x = 8
Check Your Result
x - .2x = 6.4
8 - .2(8) = 6.4 ???
8 - 1.6 = 6.4 ???
6.4 = 6.4 !!! <== Yes!

5x + 4 = 0
OK, now you do one.

SOlving Equation

TK,
How did u get that it is one fifth? I am really missinf something here, and I just dont get it. Where does the .08 come from? is that one fifth of 6.4?

You seem to be confusing the two problems.

The first is ambiguous, since I can't REALLY tell what you mean.

(1/5)*x or 1/(5*x)

1/5(x) just doesn't clear it up at all.

The second has 0.2x. That is, indeed, (1/5)*x, since 0.2 = 1/5.
There is no 0.08. The constant remaining attached to 'x' is 0.8. That is where it comes from. I divided by whatever it takes to get 'x' all by itself.
