Olivia is planning a birthday party. She needs to know how many party favors that she needs to buy to give a bag of favors to each of her 30 guests. She decided she would fill the bags with pencil tops, minibags of M&Ms, and tattoo stickers. In each bag there will be 3 more pencil toppers than M&Ms, and twice as many tattoo stickers than M&Ms. Olivia needs to buy a total of 270 gifts. How many of each kind of gift will be in each bag?

there will be 3 more pencil toppers than M&M [minibags]

[there will be] twice as many tattoo stickers than M&M [minibags]

Olivia needs to buy a total of 270 [party favors]

These statements tell you how the unknown numbers are related. These statements represent equations, but we cannot write equations involving unknown numbers until after we assign symbols to represent the unknown numbers.

The exercise asks you to find the number of pencil toppers, the number of M&M minibags, and the number of tattoo stickers.

Your first step, therefore, is to pick symbols for each of these unknown numbers, and then write down the definition for each symbol.

Once you provide us with your symbol definitions, we can help you to write equations with them.

Cheers
