Start by naming "stuffs to find"

We need to find:

Amount of money Susan has = S

Amount of money Monica has = M

Amount of money Ruth has = R

Now convert the given conditions to mathematical equations. For example:

ruth has 4 times as much as susan → R = 4 * S

Now continue....

Let S = Susan

Let M = Monica

Let R = Ruth

S + M = 186...Equation A

M + R = 372...Equation B

NOTE: R = 4S

Replace R in Equation B with 4S and solve for M. This will create a third equation that I will call C.

M + 4S = 372...Equation C

Solve Equation A for S.

S + M = 186

S = 186 - M

Plug (186 - M) into Equation C for S.

M + 4(186 - M) = 372

m + 744 - 4M = 372

-3M = 372 - 744

-3M = -372

M = -372/-3

M = 124

Monica has $124.

To find how much money Susan has, plug M = 124 in Equation A.

S + M = 186

S + 124 = 186

S = 186 - 124

S = 62

Susan has $62.

Question for you:

How much money does Ruth have? HINT: Go back to Equation B.
