THE QUESTION GOES LIKE THIS: FIND THE DISTANCE ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH BETWEEN PHOENIX AZ, 33DEG 30' N AND SALT LAKE CITY UTAH 40DEG 40' N? (USE R=3,960mi. FOR THE EARTH'S RADIUS.) I KNOW THAT C=2pir. GUIDANCE PLEASE. (30' AND 40' REPRESENT LATITUDE)

What formula(s) did they give you for this sort of exercise?

Thank you.

Eliz.

You are assuming the earth to be spherical?

Think of rays from the center of the Earth. What angle do the rays make at the center? you should be able to turn that into surface distance using the given data.

I THINK I UNDERSTAND.

THANKS FOR THE HELP TKHUNNY. I THINK I CAN WORK THIS ONE OUT. THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. THIS HAS TO DO WITH ERATOSHENE'S CALCULATION OF THE EARTH'S CIRCUMFERENCE.
