Ten straws are thrown on a table, landing in a pile, one over another. What is the max possible number of intersections?
 
Ten straws are thrown on a table, landing in a pile, one over another. What is the max possible number of intersections?

Each straw must cross each of the other straws once. This leads to the number of crossings:

Straws.....1...2....3....4....5...6....7....8....9....10

Crossings.0...1...3...6...10...15...21...28...36....45

Note that the number of crossings follows the Triangular Sequence.

The number of crossings for "n" straws is Nc = n(n - 1)/2.
