My kids need my help ,i need yours

If you want to calculate the rise and run from P1 (x1,y1) to P2 (x2,y2) then:

rise (from P1 to P2) = \(\displaystyle \Delta y\) = y2 - y1 .................. and

run (from P1 to P2) = \(\displaystyle \Delta x\) = x2 - x1

like that i plotted the two points (2,-4) to p 2 (7,8)
and the i counted how far up i went and how far along and the rise=11 and the run =7
so the slope is 11/7
but the question is find the rise
the rise is the change in y so
change in y=11
is this okay

If you want to calculate the rise and run from P1 (x1,y1) to P2 (x2,y2) then:

rise (from P1 to P2) = \(\displaystyle \Delta y\) = y2 - y1 .................. and

run (from P1 to P2) = \(\displaystyle \Delta x\) = x2 - x1
so,
rise= y2-y1
rise= 8-4
rise=4

the rise is 4 ...........is this correct?..............................No - see response #10
and the run
run= x2-x1
=7-5
=2
the run is 2 ...........is this correct?..............................No - see response #10

can i calculate it by plotting the two points and then rising and running as the points dictate?. if i can what did i do wrong in the graph i attached?
i replotted them again and do the rise and run on the graph and i counted 12 going up. the same rise that skeeter's graph has?!
i saw this method on a tutorial on finding the slope but to find it we find how much we rise and how far we run, so is it not the same?. is it not applicable here..
or am i doing something wrong?

so,
rise= y2-y1
rise= 8-4
rise=4
is this correct?
the rise is 4
and the run
run= x2-x1
=7-5
=2
the run is 2
two points P1 (2,-4) to P2 (7,8)

rise= y2-y1
rise= 8- (-4) = 8 +4 = 12

and the run
run= x2-x1
=7-2
=5
the run is 5

two points P1 (2,-4) to P2 (7,8)

rise= y2-y1
rise= 8- (-4) = 8 +4 = 12

and the run
run= x2-x1
=7-2
=5
the run is 5
oh yes, i see, i missed the sign!.
wow, thanks doc!!!
one thing i dont get. why i rise 12 units but run 5 to the right.
when i plot the point (7,8) and start to run towards it once i hit 12 ( I hit it at unti 8 on quadrant 1)
why i do run 5 units to the right, don't get it
if i start at 7 and rise until 8 where i plot (7,8)
should i not run 7?.

Find the rise in moving from point P 1(2,-4) to p 2 (7,8)

two points P1 (2,-4) to P2 (7,8)
rise= y2-y1
rise= 8- (-4) = 8 +4 = 12
and the run
run= x2-x1
=7-2
=5
the run is 5

Ok got it, so the method discussed in the YouTube video doesn't always work.
