I need help understanding this problem.

4/9x3/16=
I come up with 1/12 but the book insists the answer is 4/12......What am I doing wrong?

Dear bryanandrew,

You are right. Books do have typos sometimes. Also, 4/12 ths is an unlikely answer because it isn't a reduced fraction.

\(\displaystyle \frac{4}{9} \cdot \frac{3}{16} = \frac{3}{9} \cdot \frac{4}{16} = \frac{1}{3} \cdot \frac{1}{4} = \frac{1}{12}\)

Most books do have errors. Half the time the publishers are rushing to get the book published.

Cheers!

What about multiplying numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator and then reducing the fraction?

4 x 3 = 12, which is our numerator.

9 x 16 = 144, which is our denominator.

We now have this new fraction:

12/144

12 into 12 = 1.

12 into 144 = 12.

Final answer: 1/12.

Done!

Are you saying that the previous tutors' replies were incorrect? That the previous values were invalid?

You appear to be merely repeating what has already been posted, discussed, and established, but that would be pointless (other than for self-aggrandizement), so I must be misunderstanding your point.

I apologize for my confusion, and respectfully request that you clarify what you are correcting, amending, or otherwise adding to what the tutors and student had already agreed upon. Thank you! :D

Eliz.
