Hi Guys,

I am trying to get a solution for this Grade 4 fraction problems:

1/4 of the total fishes in pond are goldfish. guppies are 8 more than the goldfish and the remaining 32 fishes are carps. how many fishes are there in the pond?

The lesson is currently about fractions and I know there are algebraic solutions for this. Its just that I need to show a solution using fractions (operations) as the current topic.

I dont know if this is correct but i tried 1/4 of X + (1/4 of X + 8) +32 = X but I stopped there as I dont know how to proceed from here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The only way I can think of solving this problem, without using algebra - is trial and error.

We know that the number of fish must be greater than 40 (=32+8) - and go from there.

Your algebraic formulation is correct.

Thank you for the reply. I dont know if this is the way to go tough, based on the equation:

(part) guppies + carp
8 + 32 = 40

(part) guppies + (part) goldfish
1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 or 1/2

since this is broken into 2 parts, I would assume that 1/2 of the fishes in the pond is 40 (from above solution)
which means the total number of fishes is 80?

so I checked:
goldfish 1/4 of 80 = 20
guppies = 20 + 8 = 28
carps = 32
total = 80 ?
 
If we "borrow" eight guppies and group them with the carp, then the remaining guppies plus the goldfish comprise one-half the total fish in the pond.

That is, we can group the total fish F like this: [F/4 + F/4] + [8 + 32]. Add those fractions, to show the total fish as F/2 + 40

Next, add F/2 + 40/1 to get a single ratio: (F + 80)/2

This ratio equals the total fish F.

Write a proportion: (F + 80)/2 = F/1

Cross multiply.

(F + 80)(1) = 2*F

In other words, F + 80 = F + F

This last statement makes clear what F must be. :cool:
