How would you solve the following?

. . .(3x + 5)(5x^3 - 3x + 8) = 0

By the way, the "^" sign means "raised to the power" of whatever number comes after. In this case, it means "cubed". :]

Please help! Gracias!

The linear factor is simple enough to solve.

For the cubic factor, you can apply the Rational Roots Test and synthetic division, but this quickly proves that there are no rational roots. The one (negative) root must then be irrational, with the other two roots being complex.

What methods or formulas have they given you for solving cubics? How far have you gotten in applying them?

Thank you.

Eliz.
