This sounds simple enough, but I can't figure it out:

1) Solve 1.75^x=2.216 for x.

I have a scientific calculator but I can't figure out how to make it work for this.

And my second question:

2) If I want to attain $40,000 in 3 years, what rate must $34,000 be invested? compounded quarterly? compounded continuously?

I am trying to use the formula FV=Pe^(rt), which is 40,000 = 34000e^(3r), right? I don't know how to solve for the t.

Please help. Thanks!

Have you tried the logarithm function? You seem to know you need the logarithm function, bot don't seem to know what to do with it.

1.75^x = 2.216

log(1.75^x) = log(2.216)

x*log(1.75) = log(2.216)

x = log(2.216)/log(1.75)

Calculators will not think for you. That part is your responsibility.

Solving for 't' requires the use of logarithms. If you do not know anything about logarithms, you are likely in the wrong class. That can't be the start of a good day.
