110. A mobile telephone contract offers the first 80 minutes used each month for a fixed monthly charge of €9.99, inclusive of VAT, & thereafter the cost per minute is 2.2 cent, inclusive of VAT, which is rated at 16%. In this question X represents the number of minutes over 100 used in a month and Y the resulting cost of the monthly bill.

a) Express the relationship betwen X & Y as a linear expression

b) Complete this table showing your working.
X minutes2050
Y( £)2030

c) A person budgets €20 per month for their phone calls. What is the maximum minutes they can use whilst keeping within their budget? Show your working.

d) The phone company places a bar on the phone once the bill reaches €100 in any month. How many minutes are available before the bar is imposed? Show your working.

e) A phone bill amounts to €30.05. What percentage is due to the fixed monthly charge? Assume all figures are inclusive of VAT and show your working.

f) If the company were to increase the cost per minute by 10% what would be the new cost per minute? Show your working.

g) Recalculate the fixed monthly charge, €9.99, if the VAT rate changes from 16% to 20%. Show your working and give your answer to 3 decimal places.

In this question X represents the number of minutes over 100 used in a month and Y the resulting cost of the monthly bill.

a) Express the relationship betwen X & Y as a linear expression
If the customer used exactly 100 minutes, what is the value of X? What is the value of Y?
If the customer used 101 minutes, what is the value of X? What is the value of Y?
If the customer used 102 minutes, what is the value of X? What is the value of Y?
If the customer used 110 minutes, what is the value of X? What is the value of Y?
If the customer used 150 minutes, what is the value of X? What is the value of Y?

Continue, until you start seeing a pattern. Then see how you can reduce that pattern into an expression (in terms of X) for the total number of minutes. Then use this to create a formula (or equation) (in terms of X and Y) for the resulting cost.

If you get stuck, please reply showing your efforts so far. Thank you! ;)
