How do I set this up?

In a reforestation program, 1400 seedling trees were planted. Twice as many spruce as hemlocks were planted. The number of balsams planted was twenty more than triple the number of hemlocks. How many of each type of seedling was planted.

Please help I just can't seem to get it set up.

1) Pick a variable to stand for the number of hemlocks.

2) Write an expression, in terms of the variable in (1), for the number of spruce.

3) Write an expression, in terms of (1), for the number of balsams.

4) Sum (1), (2), and (3).

5) Set (4) equal to "1400".

6) Solve the equation formed in (5) to find the number of hemlocks.

7) Back-solve for the numbers of spruce and balsams.

If you get stuck, please reply showing how far you have gotten, starting from the variable you picked for step (1). Thank you.

Eliz.
