Got it!
PROV - prove without using e
I
SOS - cry for help

PROVISOS = CONDITIONS

Illegal clue display...should be:

Conditions: without using e, prove ...I cry for help!! (8)

I didn't "see" that 1st part was part of clue...
But Harry did! Congrats, Harry.
I think you should start a new thread with your 1st clue,
else we'll all get mixed up!!

Ok I've posted in a new thread.

Menace, do you have a list of the "rules" for cryptic clues? Or could you point me it the right direction?

Sent you one by PM...
Another, easier to follow:
Thanks heaps. I do cryptic crossword puzzles but have never made up clues. Just want to make sure I follow all the rules.

Welcome.
However, more important than the rules (I think Otis will agree)
is a clue worded such that it is a normal everyday sentence,
preferably with some punch to it, like humorous; at least those
are the ones that seem to win at contests...

The one I wrote has some punch to it! That's a hint.
