Modulo equals sign: why a triple-lined "equals"?

It is almost certainly an accident of history: the history of algebra.
However, there are reasonable possible explanations.
The idea of modulo is often used to define equivalence classes.
The three bar symbol is also used to indicate equivalent items.
Thus it would be a natural selection to be used with modulo.
