Michael claims that the whole numbers are closed under subtraction. Stephanie disagrees. Which equation can Stephanie use as a counterexample to show Michael's claim is false?

A. 6-4=2
B. -3-8=-11
C. 4-5=-1
D. 7-(-2)=9

What does "whole numbers are closed under subtraction" mean? The possible answers don't seem wrong at all, but I don't understand what they mean by "closed under subtraction."

Hm... That's odd: your class and textbook were supposed to cover the necessary definitions and concepts before assigning exercises on them. You might want to conference with your academic advisor regarding what is happening in your classroom.

Fortunately, there are loads of great resources available elsewhere, such as in your local library, etc, and online. So try using some of those resources to find the definitions you seek.

Have fun! :D
