Ok ,here is my math problem : The gross weight of a package and its contents is 11lbs.(pounds) 5oz.(ounces). If the packaging weighs 1lb. 15oz., what ia the net weight of the contents?

A) 10 lbs. 5 oz.

B) 12 lbs. 20 oz.

C) 9 lbs. 6 oz.

D) 10 lbs. 6 oz.

*Please don't think I'm an idiot for not knowing this, but math just ain't my thing  [/code]

Here is a similar, slightly simpler version:

Lets say I have a cup filled with jelly beans that all together weighed 10oz. Then I dumped out the jelly beans and weighed again (just the cup this time...) and it weighed in at 2 oz. How much did all the jelly beans weigh?

Well the cup + jelly beans = 10oz
and the cup = 2oz

So: 2 oz + jelly beans = 10 oz
Subtract 2 from both sides,
jelly beans = 8oz

Your problem would be very much the same as this if you convert everything into ounces first then do the subtrction as I did in the jelly bean problem and then convert back to lbs/oz. Note 1lb=16oz.

Hope that helps

A medium coke costs 1 dollar and 19 cents
A hamburger costs 3 dollars and 47 cents

How much does a medium coke and a hamburger cost?

Your problem works the same way.

Edit: daon is correct, but forget about 1lb = 16 ounces; the 4 "choices" did !

One way you may find easy is to convert to decimals, subtract, then convert back to ounces.

There are 16 oz in a pound. So, 5 ounces would be 5/16=.3125 lbs

15/16=.9375 lbs

Now subtract:

11.3125-1.9375=9.375

Now, multiply .375 times 16, that will be your ounces.
