Hey I think this belongs here even though it's from Math 3C.

[1 -8 -5 ]
[2 k 0]

Determine any values of k which make the augmented matrix inconsistent.

We actually did this in discussion but my notes are unclear and I don't quite understand what "inconsistant" means. any help appreciated.

Re: Matrixes

[ 1 -8 | -5 ]
[ 2 k | 0 ]

It looks like if k = -16, then your system would be:

x - 8y = -5
2x - 16y = 0

This would be an inconsistent system since the lines are parallel.

You should look up in your text-book or go to google.com and type in:

inconsistent matrix

You'll see there are 463000 websites with examples and definitions ready to help you.

If you go to the first suggested web-site:

you'll learn all about inconsistent matrices and more.
