I can't figure this out!

In matrix M = |x y| and m x m is a 2x2 matrix, what are the values of x and y?
|-6 -2|

row 1column 1 = x r1c2 = y
r2c1 = -6 r2c2 = -2
Any help will do!

What does your question mean?
Is this anything like what you mean.
If it is, what does it mean to solve for x & y.?
\(\displaystyle \L
M = \left[ {\begin{array}{rr}
x & y \\
{ - 6} & { - 2} \\
\end{array}} \right]\quad \Rightarrow \quad \left| M \right| = - 2x + 6y\).

You wrote in a PM: “The exact wording of the question was what are the values of x and y if m x m is a 2 x 2 matrix.”

That is a nonsense question!
Because the answer is TRIVIAL: for every x & y.
Next time, DO NOT USE PM.
I never again answer a PM!
Post additional question to your orginal.
