my Q is in a class of 24 students 1/4 [of the class] come from Kenton, 1/3 come from north shilds, the rest live in wideopen. what fraction of the class lived in wideopen? how many students is this? show all workings out.
You could do this couple of ways.

One way:
There are 24 students in total.
We know that 1/4 of them come from Kenton. How many students came from Kenton?

We know that 1/3 of them come from North Shields. How many students come from North Shields?

The remaining students from the 24 total come from Wipeopen.

This as a fraction is found by dividing by the total, 24.

Hello, clare!

Here's the other way . .

In a class of 24 students, 1/4 come from Kenton, 1/3 come from North Shilds, the rest live in Wideopen.
What fraction of the class lived in Wideopen? How many students is this?
We have: .1/4 + 1/3 .= .7/12
. . That is, 7/12 of the students come from the two other towns.

Hence, the other .1 - 7/12 .= .5/12 come from Wideopen.

And: .5/12 x 24 .= .10 students live in Wideopen

..and the 3rd way: the old fashionned way: you EARN it by working!
