(1 pt) Employment data at a large company reveal that 60 % of the
workers are married, that 21 % are college graduates, and
that 1/6 of the college graduates are married.
What is the probability that a randomly chosen worker is:

b) married but not a college graduate?
Answer = %

c) married or a college graduate?
Answer = %

Can anyone help me out?

In any 1000 workers, 600 will be married, and 210 will be graduates. Of the graduates, (1/6)(210) = 35 will be married. So how many of the 600 married folks aren't graduates?

Use the numbers provided. Given 1000 workers, 600 will be married. Of the 210 graduates, 35 are married, leaving 600 - 35 = ??? that are married but not graduates. Figure out the answer, and plug it into:

. . . . .(married but not graduates) ÷ (total)

Evaluate to find the requested percentage.

Hello, RMS!

Eliz is absolutely correct . . . did you make a diagram?

Employment data at a large company reveal that 60 % of the workers are married,
that 21 % are college graduates, and that 1/6 of the college graduates are married.
What is the probability that a randomly chosen worker is:

b) married but not a college graduate?

c) married or a college graduate?
Assume 1000 employees at the company.
. . Then 600 are married, 210 are college graduates.
. . And 1/6 of 210 = 35 are married college graduates.

Insert these facts into a "Venn diagram".
Code:
      * - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *
      |                         225 |
      |     * - - - - - *           |
      |     | Married   |           |
      |     |     * - - + - - *     |
      |     | 565 |     |     |     |
      |     |     | 35  |     |     |
      |     |     |     |     |     |
      |     * - - - - - * 175 |     |
      |           |           |     |
      |           |   College |     |
      |           * - - - - - *     |
      |                             |
      * - - - - - - - - - - - - - - *
See? . . . Now you have the whole picture!
