Start with the right triangle with lengths 1. The hypotenuse must be the square root of 2 as 1+1=2. Now the line in the rectangle separates it into two right triangles. Find the hypotenuse of one to find the lines length. 2 squared is 4, and square root of 2 squared is 2. 4+2=6. The length of the dotted line is the square root of 6.
