Find a map that has a scales, pick 2 cities on the map and then measure the distance between them using a ruler (using metric measurement will be the most accurate). Take the scale from the map and the length you measured and set up a proportion to solve. Solve your proportion to find the distance between the cities. Please make sure to explain your answer completely.
Try using a ruler or a measuring tape to measure the distance between two cities on a map or a globe. Then estimate the distance between the cities using the map's scale. Discuss the following:
the cities you selected
the scale of the map or the globe
the measurement you made with the ruler or measuring tape
the estimate you made of the actual distance between the cities
how you arrived at your estimate

What does the scale say, on the map that you chose to use?

What are the names of the two cities that you picked on the map?

When you measured the straight-line distance between these cities, what measurement did you get?

Have you studied the meaning of "proportion", yet? That is, do you understand the meaning of this word?

Please also read the forum guidelines; here is a link to the summary page. (Links to the complete guidelines and rules are located near the bottom of the page.)
