you can change the logarithm base...
given that your calculator is unlikely to have log to the base of 5.

log[sub:3prat6zt]5[/sub:3prat6zt]17 = log[sub:3prat6zt]e[/sub:3prat6zt]17/(log[sub:3prat6zt]e[/sub:3prat6zt]5).

Or log[sub:3prat6zt]5[/sub:3prat6zt]17 = x, so 5[sup:3prat6zt]x[/sup:3prat6zt]=17, answer is somewhere between 1 and 2 using other techniques.
